One Year

We’ve been homeowners for a year, and what have we done?

  • Removed lots and lots of wallpaper
  • Cleaned, sanded, primed and painted the hallway, 3 bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen
  • Painted doors and trim
  • Removed the wainscoting in the kitchen
  • Eliminated 2 doorjambs
  • Put in a bathroom closet door
  • Replaced the kitchen faucet
  • Replaced 7 light fixtures (entry, hallway, kitchen, over-sink, dining room, main bedroom and office)
  • Installed a bathroom vent upstairs
  • Replaced the top step twice
  • Nailed the attic access shut until we can figure out how to latch it so it won’t fall and break the top stair again
  • Replaced the cooktop
  • Removed the soffit cover on the kitchen cabinets
  • Replaced drawer pulls and knobs on kitchen and bathroom cabinets
  • Put in doorknobs/latches that work/fit upstairs (and don’t lock us in/out of rooms)
  • Updated the electrical supply
  • Wired for surround-sound
  • Created a grounded loop
  • Converted necessary outlets to GFI
  • Killed some mold
  • Repaired water damage to drywall
  • Repaired drywall where the electrician said he needed to cut through to run the proper wire to the stove
  • Got that electrician fired for not pulling permits when upgrading electrical service or following code when putting in that wire
  • Finished the fence around the backyard
  • Replaced a section of the old fence that rotted off at the ground
  • Removed a tree
  • Replaced a window
  • Replaced outlet and switch covers
  • Replaced a bathroom faucet
  • Repaired/replaced toilet handles
  • Re-finished the upstairs tub twice
  • Built a compost bin
  • Removed backsplash on the sink side of the kitchen
  • Hung pictures and a wine glass rack
  • Replaced the dishwasher (hooray!)
  • Put in insulation in the attic (it still needs much more)
  • Planted some flowers (most have died or never came up)
  • Enjoyed the roses and gardenias and daylilies and other flowers that were already here
  • Hung curtains, replaced some blinds, installed hooks
  • Had some beers

We’ve still got a lot left to do, like replacing the rest of the doorknobs and hinges, re-keying the locks, building cabinet doors for the kitchen, figuring out a countertop, replacing the oven and kitchen floor, and the roof and exterior painting will need to be done before too long. We still have wallpaper in the upstairs bathroom to remove and a laundry room to finish, but I think we’re making some good progress!
